MICROPHONE POSITIONING

Positioning An Uni-Directional & Noise Cancelling Microphone

·       With a Noise-Cancelling microphone, to obtain the best signal to noise ratio and voice quality, position the microphone in front of the lips. To prevent plosives, use a good quality windscreen.

·       Do not position the microphone close to the nose or at the chin area as signal to noise and voice quality will be affected.

·       With Uni-Directional microphones (Cardioid, Super-Cardioid, Hyper-Cardioid), position the microphone at the corner of the lips to obtain a good signal to noise ratio and voice quality and still prevent plosives. Use a windscreen for better results.

·       As with Noise-Cancelling microphones, do not position the microphone close to the nose or at the chin area.

·       For both Uni-Directional and Noise-Cancelling microphones, the gap between the lips and the microphone should be between ¼ inch (6mm) to one inch (25mm) to obtain the best signal to noise ratio and voice quality. The noisier the surrounding, the closer the microphone should be.

·       Positioning the microphone too far away from the lips will greatly reduce its noise rejection ability. Voice pickup will be weak and voice quality will be poor.

Positioning An Omni-Directional Microphone

·      For best signal to noise ratio (highest gain before feedback) and voice quality, position the microphone at the corner of the lips.

·      If breadth noise or plosives is an issue, position the microphone just below the corner of the lips.  Signal to noise ratio and voice quality will still be good.

·      Do not position the microphone too close to the nose as it may pick up breathing noise. Voice quality will also be affected.

·      Do not position the microphone right in front of the lips as it will pick up breathing noise as well as cause plosive sounds.

·    With a short microphone boom, positioning the microphone slightly below the lips is still acceptable.  However, positioning the microphone above the lips will not be as good.

·    If the microphone boom length is short, simply position the microphone as close as possible to the corner of the lips for best noise ratio and voice quality.

Positioning An Uni-Directional & Noise Cancelling Microphone

·      Position the lavalier at the centre and as close to the mouth as possible, while ensuring that the user can still see the mic when he looks down and it’s not blocked by the chin.

·      When using Uni-Directional microphone, ensure it is pointed upwards and towards the mouth!

·    Avoid positioning the lavalier to the side as the voice level will vary substantially whenever the user turns his/her head to the left and to the right.
